Yami Gautam Almost Quit Bollywood Before Uri's Success; Opens Up on Favouritism

Yami Gautam admitted that she was on the brink of quitting Bollywood just before her breakthrough role in Vicky Kaushal’s 2019 film Uri: The Surgical Strike. The actress, who debuted in 2012 with Vicky Donor, said that for several years after her first film she struggled to find roles that offered depth and meaning. Frustrated by the lack of substantial offers, Yami decided to return to her hometown in Himachal Pradesh, where she imagined starting a new life on her family’s farmland.

In an interview with Filmfare, Yami explained that she had “made peace with leaving the industry altogether” and had even told her parents she might go back home. Their supportive response—“Come home”—didn’t deter her, but the moment she stopped clinging to the industry out of fear, everything changed. The release of Uri and the simultaneous success of Bala, directed by her future husband Aditya Dhar, flipped her career trajectory overnight.

Yami also spoke candidly about the challenges of being an outsider in a film ecosystem that often favors star‑born talent. She noted that while star kids receive repeated opportunities, outsiders must constantly prove themselves, even when they feel ready for a role. “If I were given that many opportunities, wouldn’t I also continue growing as an actor?” she asked, highlighting the frustration of seeing others receive repeated chances simply because of their lineage.

Despite these hurdles, Yami expressed optimism about the current state of the industry. She believes that today’s audiences judge actors by their talent and the quality of their films rather than their background. “That gives me tremendous hope for the next generation,” she said. She also admitted feeling hurt by the favouritism she witnessed, recalling how conversations about potential projects would abruptly end without explanation, causing opportunities to slip away.
