Farhan Akhtar Exits Aamir Khan's Lalkaara; Sidhant Gupta Steps In

Aamir Khan and director Ashutosh Gowariker’s upcoming sports drama Lalkaara has seen a significant casting shift after Farhan Akhtar opted out of the project. The decision, reported exclusively by Bollywood Hungama, came as Akhtar was preparing to star in Neeraj Pandey’s biopic on legendary composer R.D. Burman, a role that demands months of intensive preparation and full dedication.

Akhtar’s withdrawal was driven by scheduling conflicts. While Lalkaara required him to undergo extensive cricket training and commit to a lengthy shoot, the biopic’s demanding schedule left little room for the sports drama. Despite stepping away from acting in the film, Akhtar remains attached as a producer, working alongside Ritesh Sidhwani under their Excel Entertainment banner in partnership with Rajkumar Hirani Films.

To fill the vacancy, producers have brought in Jubilee actor Sidhant Gupta. Gupta, known for his work in Inside Edge, Jubilee, Black Warrant and Freedom at Midnight, will portray one of Aamir Khan’s friends in the story. The change is said to have no impact on the film’s production timeline, with shooting slated to begin on October 1 in Mumbai.

Lalkaara is billed as an ambitious sports saga centered on the historic 1952 India‑Pakistan Test series, the first series played after the Partition. The film reunites Khan and Gowariker, who last collaborated on the 2001 classic Lagaan, and features writers Piyush Gupta and Neeraj Singh, known for Dangal and Nil Battey Sannata. Aamir Khan will play Lala Amarnath, the first captain of independent India’s cricket team, while the narrative explores friendship, rivalry and national pride against a pivotal chapter in Indian cricket history.
