Rakul Preet Singh on Surpanakha; Complexity Beyond History's Memory

Rakul Preet Singh has captured headlines after her brief but striking appearance as Surpanakha in the recently released trailer for the epic film adaptation of the Ramayana. The teaser, which dropped a few days ago, quickly went viral across social media, sparking debates over the visual portrayal of the legendary characters and the sheer scale of the production. While Ranbir Kapoor’s depiction of Lord Rama and Sai Pallavi’s portrayal of Sita dominated the conversation, it was Singh’s glimpse as the cunning sister of Ravana that surprised many viewers.

In the trailer, Singh’s Surpanakha is presented with a bold, contemporary aesthetic that earned her a positive response from fans and critics alike. The character, known for instigating the central conflict of the epic by falling in love with Rama and later attacking Sita, is traditionally remembered for a single dramatic moment. Singh, however, highlighted the depth of the role, explaining that her decision to accept the part stemmed from the character’s complexity. “History often remembers her for one moment, but there is so much more to her story,” she said in a repost on X, adding that roles which challenge perception are the most exciting for an actor.

One fan’s open letter to Singh, which she shared on her social media, praised her choice and asked why she was drawn to such a misunderstood figure. The letter, which praised Surpanakha’s layered personality, caught Singh’s attention and prompted her to thank the fan for the “beautiful letter.” She echoed the sentiment that audiences should approach the character with an open mind when the film releases.

The Ramayana film, directed by an undisclosed director and featuring a star-studded cast, is slated to hit theaters worldwide on November 8, coinciding with Diwali. In addition to Kapoor, Sai Pallavi, and Yash as Ravana, the film also stars Sunny Deol as Lord Hanuman and Ravie Dubey as Lakshmana. With a reported budget of ₹4,000 crore, the project boasts music from AR Rahman and Hans Zimmer. The first part of the story will be released in 2024, with a second installment scheduled for 2027.

Senior Content Producer Santanu Das of the Hindustan Times, who has covered South Asian independent cinema and major film festivals, noted the significance of this adaptation in bringing an ancient epic to a contemporary audience. The film’s ambitious scope and high-profile talent underscore its potential to become a landmark release in Indian cinema.
