Akanksha Chamola sparks controversy; needs sex education

The finale of Netflix’s new season of Lock Upp: Sach Ya Sazaa ended on Wednesday evening with Shreya Kalra lifting the trophy. The show’s elimination of contestant Akanksha Chamola before the final round sparked a wave of online backlash that focused on her personal life and her remarks about sexuality.

After her exit, Chamola was asked by fellow contestant Tejasswi Prakash about her views on sexuality. Prakash tried to explain that sexuality is not merely a phase, but Chamola insisted that it was. She said, “Yeah, it is. There are certain things emotionally, physically, mentally that get you to that point where you are like, you know what, I just don’t want to have this thing with anyone,” and added that she felt she was “physically incapable of a relation in that sense.”

The clip of Chamola’s statement quickly spread across X (formerly Twitter) and other social media platforms. Users expressed frustration, with comments such as, “No mam, sexuality is not a phase,” and “She is a hypocrite and arrogant.” Some users pointed out that sexuality is an orientation, not a trend, and that the LGBTQ+ community has long fought for recognition of this fact.

Other comments were harsher, labeling Chamola as mentally disturbed or calling her a “dumbf**k idiot.” A more measured reply noted that a person can be both bisexual and asexual, explaining that these terms refer to different aspects of the spectrum and that sexuality, while fluid, is not a phase.

Chamola’s remarks have ignited a broader conversation about the need for media training and sex education for public figures. Critics argue that her statements reflect a misunderstanding of sexual identity and that her comments could perpetuate stigma against the LGBTQ+ community.
