Netflix India has announced that Imtiaz Ali’s romantic drama Main Vaapas Aaunga will premiere on its platform on August 7, the same day the film was set to release in theatres. The streaming debut comes after the film’s theatrical run began in June, drawing positive reviews but initially lagging at the box office. Fans of the 95‑year‑old protagonist, played by Naseeruddin Shah, can now watch the story from home.
In the film, an elderly man suffers a stroke while trying to reach Pakistan. His grandson pieces together fragments of a pre‑partition past as the old man drifts in and out of memory, struggling to find peace in his final days. The narrative explores the long‑lasting human impact of the borders drawn in 1947, focusing on memory rather than the Partition itself.
Critics praised the movie for its emotional depth. A review in the Hindustan Times noted that the film “is a film about memory itself…a deeply human story that reaches emotional heights few filmmakers today can access.”
Despite a slow start, the film’s box‑office performance turned around dramatically. Producer Mohit Choudhary said the movie had recovered its costs through theatrical and non‑theatrical revenue streams by its sixth week, marking it as a commercial hit. He highlighted the power of word‑of‑mouth and the soundtrack’s popularity as key factors in the surge of ticket sales.
With its new Netflix release, viewers who missed the theatrical run can now experience the poignant story of love, memory, and the enduring echoes of history.
