Actor Imran Khan arrested in Mumbai protest; claims police silence civic voices

Actor Imran Khan was taken into custody by Mumbai Police on October 10 while he joined a demonstration at August Kranti Maidan. The rally, organised in support of the Cockroach Janata Party’s protest in Delhi, demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.

During the arrest, Khan posted a selfie from inside the police van on Instagram, captioning it, “Apparently I’m going for a drive.” Before being detained, he told the news agency ANI that he was there as a citizen, not as a representative of any group, and that he had no demands. “I am here to see why freedom of movement is being restricted—why people’s voices are being suppressed,” he said. “I am not in a position to make demands of anyone. Nor am I part of any organization. I am just here as a representative.”

The actor, best known for films such as Jaane Tu... Ya Jaane Na and I Hate Luv Storys, has largely stayed out of the spotlight in recent years. He had previously taken part in July’s protests calling for the resignation of Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan after the leak of the NEET question paper.

The incident highlights growing tensions between civic activists and law‑enforcement agencies in Mumbai, as well as the broader debate over the right to protest and freedom of movement in India.
