Shah Rukh Khan’s next hit faces his own record books; King’s success measured against 2023 blockbusters

Shah Rukh Khan’s return to the big screen in 2023 was nothing short of a blockbuster bonanza. After a four‑year break from leading roles, the superstar opened the year with Pathaan, which hauled in a staggering ₹1,050.30 crore worldwide. He followed that with Jawan, which pushed the total even higher, grossing ₹1,148.32 crore. The two films together crossed the ₹2,200 crore mark globally, cementing Khan’s status as one of Indian cinema’s biggest superstars.

Now, three years later, the actor is gearing up for his next theatrical outing, King. The film, directed by Siddharth Anand, is slated for release on 24 December 2026 and reunites Khan with the Pathaan director. It promises high‑octane action and boasts an ensemble cast that includes Deepika Padukone, Suhana Khan and Abhishek Bachchan.

What makes King’s prospects intriguing is not just its star power or its action‑packed premise, but the fact that its biggest competitor may be Shah Rukh Khan’s own box‑office legacy. Prior to Pathaan and Jawan, a worldwide haul of ₹300‑400 crore was considered a major success for many Bollywood releases. Khan’s back‑to‑back ₹1,000‑crore blockbusters have effectively raised the bar, creating a benchmark that even a hugely successful film could be judged against.

Industry chatter and fan speculation now focus on whether King can break the ₹1,000‑crore threshold, surpass Pathaan, or even challenge Jawan. A scenario where the film collects only ₹600‑700 crore worldwide would still be extraordinary for most Hindi films, yet some sections of the industry and social media might label it underwhelming because Khan has delivered larger hits in the past.

Reports from July indicate that King is being produced on a budget of roughly ₹450 crore, excluding publicity costs and Khan’s remuneration. Siddharth Anand has disputed these figures, so the final production cost remains unconfirmed. Nevertheless, the film is positioned as an ambitious action spectacle, and its commercial performance is expected to attract significant attention.

The 24 December release date places King in a crowded holiday window, competing for screens and premium formats against Hollywood blockbusters such as Avengers: Doomsday and Dune: Part Three. While the Christmas and New Year holidays can provide a strong opening, the packed schedule may affect King’s ability to secure the prime slots it needs to replicate the success of its predecessors.
