PVR INOX has announced a special three‑week theatrical run featuring three iconic films from the legendary Sunny Deol‑Rajkumar Santoshi partnership: Damini, Ghatak and Ghayal. The re‑releases begin on July 24 with Damini, followed by Ghatak on July 31, and conclude with Ghayal on August 7. The screenings are positioned as a prelude to the upcoming reunion film Batwara 1947, which is slated for release on August 14.
Sunny Deol’s performances in these classics have left a lasting imprint on Hindi cinema, earning him the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor for his role in Damini and the National Film Award Special Jury Award as well as the Filmfare Award for Best Actor for Ghayal. Director Rajkumar Santoshi received the Filmfare Award for Best Director for Damini and the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment for Ghayal. The trio of films collectively showcase the powerful storytelling and emotional depth that defined their collaborations.
In a statement posted on Instagram on July 17, PVR INOX highlighted the event with the caption, “Action. Emotion. Powerful storytelling. 🔥💯 Relive the unforgettable Deol - Santoshi classics as they return to the big screen before you watch Batwara 1947.” The announcement underscores the intent to bring these seminal works back to the cinema experience where they were originally intended to be seen.
Following the re‑releases, Batwara 1947 will bring Deol and Santoshi together again after years apart. Produced in association with Aamir Khan Productions and adapted from Asghar Wajahat’s play Jis Lahore Nai Vekhya, O Jamya E Nai, the film is set against the backdrop of the 1947 Partition. It tells a poignant story of humanity, resilience, and hope amid upheaval. Sunny Deol stars as Sikander Mirza, while Preity Zinta returns to the big screen. The ensemble also features Shabana Azmi, Ali Fazal, Abhimanyu Singh and Karan Deol. Cinematography is handled by Santosh Sivan, with music composed by A.R. Rahman and lyrics by Javed Akhtar.
With the combined appeal of nostalgic classics and a fresh blockbuster, audiences can look forward to a cinematic journey that celebrates both the legacy and future of Indian cinema.
