A new episode of ABC’s investigative series 20/20 has reignited national attention on the 1989 kidnapping of 11‑year‑old Jacob Wetterling, a case that left the small Minnesota town of Jacob’s hometown in a state of shock. The episode focuses on Aaron Larson, Wetterling’s best friend, who was present when a masked man seized the child while the trio were biking home from school.
According to the documentary, Jacob, his older brother Trevor, and Aaron were riding their bicycles when an unknown man stopped them and demanded they dismount and lie face down in a ditch. The assailant threatened to shoot them if they did not comply and forced the boys to run into the woods. When they finally turned back, Jacob was gone. The boys immediately sought help, but it was too late; Jacob’s body was not found until years later, confirming he had been murdered.
Larson, who was eleven at the time, has lived in southwest Minnesota with his two children since the crime. In a recent interview, he recounted the night’s terror, saying, “He grabbed Jacob and told us to go into the woods or he’d shoot.” He also described the shock of seeing the suspect’s photo after Danny Heinrich’s arrest in 2015, adding, “I will say it’s a feeling I hadn’t had from looking at any pictures of other people.”
Patty Wetterling, Jacob’s mother, spoke publicly after Heinrich’s confession, expressing gratitude for the justice that had finally come. “He has taught us all how to live, how to love, how to be fair, how to be kind,” she said, adding, “I’m so sorry.”
The 20/20 episode also touches on a disturbing detail that Larson claims he was sexually assaulted by the perpetrator before being forced to run. The show’s producers have highlighted how the case, once a local tragedy, has become a national symbol of the fight against child abduction.
