After the release of his latest epic, Christopher Nolan has announced that he will step away from directing for at least three years. The Oscar‑winning filmmaker revealed that the sheer scale of The Odyssey pushed both him and his crew to their physical limits, prompting him to take a much‑needed break.
Nolan spoke to Today about the demanding nature of the production, saying, “I definitely hit the limits of my own stamina and everybody’s stamina, I think.” He added that a story as grand as Homer's epic “should be difficult,” and that making the film was a natural fit for the challenges it presented.
The film is notable for being the first commercial feature shot entirely with IMAX cameras. Because the cameras are large, heavy and complex, the crew had to develop new techniques to capture sequences without compromising Nolan’s vision. He recalled pitching the idea to the IMAX team and stating that if they were ever going to shoot an entire movie that way, this project was the one.
Released on July 17, 2026, The Odyssey runs nearly three hours and follows King Odysseus’s decade‑long struggle to return home to Ithaca after the Trojan War. Matt Damon stars as Odysseus, with Anne Hathaway as Penelope, Tom Holland as their son Telemachus, Robert Pattinson as Antinous, Zendaya as Athena, Charlize Theron as Calypso, and Lupita Nyong’o in dual roles as Helen of Troy and Clytemnestra.
The film premiered in Mumbai, where Nolan, Damon, Holland and producer Emma Thomas attended the screenings and media events during a two‑day trip. According to the trade website Sacnilk, the movie opened strongly at the box office, grossing ₹47.03 crore worldwide.
