Sunny Deol on playing Lord Hanuman; promises to do justice to the role

Sunny Deol, who has recently appeared in the Netflix series Ikka, spoke at the Pratham Sankalp event in New Delhi about his new role as Lord Hanuman in Nitesh Tiwari’s upcoming epic Ramayana. The veteran actor, dressed in an all‑black ensemble and sporting a clean‑shaven look, admitted that he has only just begun filming and is still learning the nuances of the mythic character.

During the event, Deol emphasized the weight of portraying a figure so deeply revered in Hindu mythology. He said, “I have done only a little work on the film so far. I still have a long way to go.” The actor described the role as a blessing that comes with immense responsibility, adding that he is determined to honor the character with honesty and respect.

Deol explained that Hanuman is more than a symbol of strength; he is a blend of innocence, playfulness, devotion, and immense power. “Playing Hanuman ji is not easy,” he said, but he also expressed excitement, noting that the character is loved by everyone and is a devoted follower of Lord Rama.

The film will feature an impressive ensemble, including Ranbir Kapoor as Rama, Sai Pallavi as Sita, Yash as Ravana, Ravi Dubey as Lakshman, Lara Dutta as Kaikeyi, Rakul Preet Singh as Surpanakha, Kajal Aggarwal as Mandodari, and Arun Govil as King Dashrath. It will also star Vivek Oberoi and Kunal Kapoor in supporting roles.

After its grand unveiling in New Delhi, the epic will travel to San Diego Comic‑Con on July 23, becoming only the second Indian film—after Kalki 2898 AD—to be showcased at the world‑famous pop culture event. The official Comic‑Con description promises an age‑old battle where “the fate of worlds hangs in the balance” as Rama faces the immortal Ravana, a ruler driven by pride and vengeance.
