Vijay’s long‑anticipated Tamil political drama, Jana Nayagan, finally opened on screens on July 23 after a seven‑month delay. The film, billed as the actor’s swan song before he exits cinema for a political career, has been the subject of speculation for months, with many fans and media outlets debating whether it is a remake of the 2023 Telugu hit Bhagavanth Kesari. Director H Vinoth has confirmed that the film draws heavily from the Telugu original, but the extent of the borrowing varies between the two halves of the story.
In a recent interview with Galatta Plus, Vinoth disclosed that roughly 50 % of Jana Nayagan is inspired by Bhagavanth Kesari. He added that the first half of the Tamil version contains about 60 % similarity, while the second half incorporates only around 20 % of the original material. The director noted that his previous experience adapting Pink into Tamil as Nerkonda Paarvai made him cautious about taking on another remake, but Vijay’s enthusiasm for the Telugu film persuaded him to proceed.
Vinoth highlighted Vijay’s commitment to women’s empowerment as a key factor that drew him to the project. He recalled that Vijay, who is set to become the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu after winning the recent elections with the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) party, requested the director to consider remaking Bhagavanth Kesari for a Tamil audience. “I didn’t want to miss the opportunity to work on Vijay sir’s last film,” Vinoth said, adding that he respected Vijay’s conviction on social issues.
The rumor that Jana Nayagan is a remake surfaced in January 2025 when VTV Ganesh claimed that Vijay had watched the Telugu film five times and wanted director Anil Ravipudi to helm the Tamil version. Anil later denied the claim, stating that he had not been approached and that the film’s status should remain unconfirmed until its release. In December, he reiterated that Vijay was a “superb gentleman” and that the final outcome would only be clear after the film’s debut.
Starring Vijay alongside Mamitha Baiju, Pooja Hegde, and Bobby Deol, Jana Nayagan also features a supporting cast that includes veteran actors who bring depth to the political narrative. The film will be released in Telugu as Jana Nayakudu and in Hindi as Jan Neta, expanding its reach across India. Despite the controversies surrounding its originality, the movie is positioned as a significant cultural event, marking Vijay’s last appearance on the silver screen before he transitions fully into politics.
