A new Netflix documentary titled A Toxic Love Story has thrust the case of Michelle Hadley into the spotlight, revealing how she was wrongfully accused of orchestrating a harassment campaign against her ex‑husband, Ian Diaz, and his new wife, Angela Connell Diaz. The film traces the events that unfolded in 2016, when the newlyweds appeared to be living a blissful life in Anaheim, California, minutes from Disneyland, with Angela expecting twins.
The trouble began when Angela started receiving threatening emails from an online account named “Lilithistruth.” The messages contained violent threats aimed at her, her home, and her unborn twins. The account even posed as Angela to respond to a Craigslist ad describing a rape fantasy, asking a stranger to carry it out at the couple’s condominium. Concerned for their safety, Ian, a U.S. deputy marshal, and Angela reported the threats to the police.
Investigators initially suspected Michelle Hadley, Ian’s former fiancée, because the username “Lilithistruth” seemed to reference the biblical figure Lilith, and earlier emails from Hadley to Ian contained biblical language. Hadley’s history of complex post‑traumatic stress disorder and a prior incident where she was found wandering in the Arizona desert added to the suspicion. However, as the investigation progressed, evidence emerged that pointed to a different source.
Digital forensics revealed that the threatening emails originated from locations where Ian and Angela were present, including the Anaheim condominium they shared. Prosecutors concluded that Ian and Angela had created the “Lilithistruth” persona to frame Michelle Hadley. Despite this, Hadley was arrested and spent 88 days in a California jail in 2016 after being accused of a stalking campaign she did not commit.
Following her release, Michelle Hadley has spoken publicly about her ordeal and emerged as a strong survivor. The documentary provides a detailed look at the false accusations, the investigation, and the impact on Hadley’s life, highlighting the importance of thorough forensic analysis in cases involving digital evidence.
