Sony Pictures to Distribute Ranbir Kapoor's 'Ramayana'; Global Release Confirmed

In a move that could reshape how India’s epic tales reach global audiences, Sony Pictures Entertainment has been announced as the worldwide distributor for Namit Malhotra’s forthcoming film adaptation of the Ramayana. The announcement, made by Prime Focus Studios in New Delhi on Friday, confirms that Sony will handle distribution outside India, while Prime Focus will manage the Indian market.

The film, titled simply “Ramayana,” is a high‑budget action‑adventure that brings the ancient Sanskrit epic to the big screen. It stars Ranbir Kapoor in the lead role, joined by Yash and Sai Pallavi. The project is directed by Nitesh Tiwari, known for his critically acclaimed work, and features a musical score from Oscar‑winning composers Hans Zimmer and A.R. Rahman.

Malhotra, the CEO of visual‑effects powerhouse DNEG and founder of Prime Focus Studios, explained the significance of the partnership. “Ramayana has inspired people through its timeless humanity and enduring values,” he said. “Our ambition has always been to honour that legacy while creating a cinematic experience worthy of audiences everywhere. Through DNEG, we have spent decades helping filmmakers realise some of the world’s most ambitious cinematic visions. With Prime Focus Studios, we are now bringing that same commitment to storytelling to one of the world’s greatest epics.”

He added that collaborating with Sony Pictures gives the film an “extraordinary opportunity to connect with international audiences and introduce this timeless story to moviegoers around the world.” In an Instagram post, Malhotra noted that the Friday trailer launch was postponed to allow the announcement of the Sony partnership. He emphasized that the new collaboration ensures the film will be shown globally “like any major global Hollywood film.”

The two‑part saga is slated to hit theatres during Diwali 2026, with the first installment scheduled for release. The cast also includes Ravi Dubey, Sunny Deol, Vivek Oberoi, and Arun Govil, among others. The partnership with Sony is expected to open doors for international audiences to experience the richness of Indian culture and storytelling with renewed pride and enthusiasm.
