Pearle Maaney sparks controversy; Sibi Malayil's son fires back

Indian YouTuber Pearle Maaney found herself at the centre of a heated debate after she posted a commentary on the recent student protests in Delhi. In her original Instagram post, the influencer warned that her words might trigger discomfort, describing the backlash she was receiving and accusing a “failed filmmaker” of over‑reacting by drafting a lengthy script about her four‑page comment. She added a series of provocative remarks about her children, freedom of speech and a personal preference for saffron, the colour of the Indian flag, before deleting the text and disabling the comments section on the post.

The backlash intensified when Sibi Malayil’s son, filmmaker Joe, took to Instagram Stories to confront Maaney. He identified the “failed filmmaker” as his father, Sibi Malayil, and urged Maaney to verify the facts before attacking him. Joe’s response was laced with sarcasm, calling her lazy for reading only a few slides of his critique and accusing her of “half‑cooked diplomacy.” He also recalled his earlier statement that Maaney’s suggestion for students to return home was “peak stupidity.”

Earlier in the week, after police used lathis on students protesting at Jantar Mantar, Maaney had spoken out on the CJP protests, claiming that the comments section reflected her freedom of speech. The controversy unfolded against the backdrop of the growing “Cockroach Janta Party” protests in Delhi, which prompted Prime Minister Narendra Modi to send a rare video message acknowledging the issue and announcing plans for fast‑track courts and stricter punishments for protest participants.

Meanwhile, climate activist Sonam Wangchuk ended his hunger strike following a meeting with officials, a development that came as the protests continued to dominate headlines. The clash between Maaney and Joe Malayil’s son highlights the polarised nature of online discourse surrounding political protests in India, with influencers, filmmakers and activists all voicing sharply divergent views on the same events.
