Santoshi slams audience bias over Sunny Deol’s Muslim role; challenges if Spider‑Man would be rejected

Rajkumar Santoshi’s latest film, Batwara 1947, marks a first for actor Sunny Deol as he takes on a Muslim role in a Partition‑era drama.

While word‑of‑mouth has been largely positive, the director is surprised that the buzz has not translated into robust ticket sales. Santoshi has urged cinema‑goers to step out, watch the film, and then form their own opinions.

In a recent interview, the filmmaker drew a provocative comparison: “If Spider‑Man’s name were Aslam Sheikh, would people reject him?” The question was meant to highlight perceived bias against Deol’s character.

Viewers who have seen the movie have sent in fan mail, booked screenings, and even left the theatre with tears in their eyes. Many have compared Batwara 1947 to Deol’s blockbuster Gadar, claiming it is a bigger and better film.

Santoshi has openly criticized those spreading hate and refusing to watch the film because of Deol’s Muslim portrayal. He insists that audiences should experience the story first before judging, saying, “I want people to step into the theater and see the film.”
