Mumbai police have filed a First Information Report (FIR) against Bollywood actor Imran Khan, his girlfriend Lekha Washington and several others after they were detained during a protest at August Kranti Maidan on Saturday, October 10. The demonstration was organized in support of the Cockroach Janta Party’s (CJP) protest in Delhi, which demanded the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar.
The FIR, lodged at Gamdevi police station, cites Sections 223, 126(2), 189(2), 189(3) and 189(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). These provisions cover disobedience of orders issued by public servants, wrongful restraint and offences related to unlawful assembly. The complaint was filed by police personnel after the gathering, which had been held amid heightened security measures.
More than 400 people were reportedly detained during the protest, with some estimates reaching 600 across Mumbai. Among those detained were Imran Khan, Lekha Washington and Imran’s cousin, Zayn Marie Khan. They were released later that night, but not before police had barricaded roads around the Maidan and deployed additional staff to prevent the gathering from proceeding.
Following his detention, Imran posted a selfie from inside a police van on Instagram, captioning it “Apparently I'm going for a drive.” Lekha also shared updates on social media, saying she did not know where the police were taking them and later reassured followers that they were safe and on their way home after the release.
The protest in Mumbai was held in solidarity with the CJP’s demonstration in Delhi, where protesters were similarly detained during a major police operation. The movement has been demanding Gyanesh Kumar’s resignation over allegations concerning the revision of electoral rolls. With the FIR now registered, legal proceedings against Imran, Lekha and the other individuals named in the case have begun, and further developments are awaited.
