Ramayana may get a third act; audience reaction could trigger a new chapter

During the film’s recent Los Angeles premiere, producer Namit Malhotra revealed that the epic mythological saga, currently released as a two‑part series, was originally conceived as a trilogy. He explained that the creative team had shifted the plan to two films, but left the door open for a potential third installment, contingent on how audiences react to the first two parts.

Malhotra said the decision to trim the story from three to two parts was made after the initial planning stages, and that the production is still in the midst of shooting. He added, “We started out the film, we were going to make it in three parts, then we decided to make it in two. We’re still in the middle of filming, so you know, I’m not going to give any spoilers for anything – but you know, who knows the way, once we get all the response and all the feedback, we may sit back on the table and the drawing board and see if there is anything else that we want to add or subtract, depending on how the world has received it.”

In addition to discussing the possibility of a third chapter, Malhotra highlighted that the makers have produced two versions of the first film, each with a different runtime. The team is evaluating audience feedback to decide whether a single global cut will suffice or if an extended version should be released. He noted, “We have two different versions of the same film, but two different run times on one – on part one itself. So, depending on which way the next round of feedback goes, I’d love to not have to make two different versions. I’m sure Nitesh would also prefer that, that if you could just stick to one, one version for the world.”

Malhotra compared the situation to the extended editions of “The Lord of the Rings,” suggesting that a separate version could be justified if the material warrants it. The film, directed by Nitesh Tiwari, stars Ranbir Kapoor as Lord Rama, Sai Pallavi as Sita, Yash as Ravana, Sunny Deol as Hanuman, and Ravie Dubey as Lakshman. It was produced by Prime Focus Studios in partnership with DNEG and Monster Mind Creations, and features an original score by Hans Zimmer and A.R. Rahman.

“Ramayana: Part 1 – Rise of a Legend” is slated for a worldwide theatrical release on November 5, 2026, in standard and IMAX formats. The producer’s comments come as the film’s reception will be closely monitored, with the possibility of a third part hinging on audience response and box‑office performance.
