On Monday morning, tens of thousands of demonstrators swarmed central Delhi in an unapproved march aimed at Parliament. The protest, organized by the Cockroach Janta Party (CJP), quickly devolved into chaos as police employed batons and tear‑gas shells to break up crowds that had breached barricades and halted large parts of the capital.
Actor‑turned‑BJP MP Kangana Ranaut was present at the Parliament premises during the Monsoon Session when the unrest unfolded. Speaking to the news agency ANI, she described the scene: “We were worried. The gates were also closed. The Parliamentarians were inside. The mob was in a mode to attack, and at one point we thought they might attack us, so we were scared.” She added that the Delhi Police had “taken the stones and injuries upon themselves and ensured that no harm came to the public,” praising the officers for creating a shield between the crowd and the lawmakers.
The CJP had called for a march from Jantar Mantar, where protesters had been camped for a month, to the Parliament. Thousands converged on the designated protest site, prompting police to set up hundreds of barricades on ten arterial roads. The crowd eventually slipped into narrow lanes and gathered at a roundabout, where riot police in full gear stood behind layers of metal barriers.
Clashes erupted around 10:30 a.m. when demonstrators smashed past a barricade near Kerala House, forcing Delhi Police to lathi‑charge the crowd. By 11:30 a.m., protesters had pushed through a barricade outside Parliament Street Police Station and continued marching, prompting further lathi charges. Roughly thirty minutes later, a new confrontation broke out near Patel Chowk and Rail Bhawan. Police finally pushed the crowd back near Raisina Road using tear‑gas shells, keeping them 50–100 metres from the Parliament gate before dispersing them across central Delhi.
In a statement, Delhi Police said the protesters had displayed violent behaviour, attacking personnel with stones and other objects while violating prohibitory orders. The police are filing a first information report for rioting, assault on public servants, and damage to public property.
