Amitabh Bachchan Clarifies Health Rumors; Argentina World Cup Loss

Bollywood legend Amitabh Bachchan set off a wave of speculation on Tuesday after posting a lengthy note on his Tumblr blog that mentioned surgery, intensive care and recovery. The 83‑year‑old star’s words, however, were not about his own health. In a statement to Variety India, Bachchan clarified that he had not undergone any surgery and that the post was a metaphorical reflection on the emotional toll of defeat, specifically referencing Argentina’s loss to Spain in the recent FIFA World Cup final.

In the blog entry, Bachchan wrote about the “most difficult phase” after leaving the hospital, comparing it to the period a champion faces after a loss. He added that “some brave it, some succumb,” and that “the choice each makes individually” determines whether one remains a champion or lives in past glory. Fans quickly misinterpreted the message as a personal health update, prompting Bachchan to reassure the public that he is “fine” and his health is “absolutely…so far.”

The confusion began a day after Spain lifted their second World Cup title by defeating Argentina. Bachchan’s note, which contained no direct reference to the match, was mistakenly taken as a comment on his own condition. In response, he clarified that the post was meant to honor Messi as a champion who had suffered defeat, not himself.

While the actor’s health concerns were allayed, Bachchan’s schedule remains packed. He is slated to reprise his role as Ashwatthama in the upcoming sequel to “Kalki 2898 AD,” a film directed by Nag Ashwin that also stars Prabhas and Kamal Haasan. The sequel, however, has yet to receive a release date. Additionally, Bachchan will return as the host of “Kaun Banega Crorepati,” with the new season set to premiere on August 10.
