Vijay's Jana Nayagan leaked; director denies deliberate leak to aid CM's election

After a seven‑month delay, Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Vijay’s final outing as an actor, the political drama Jana Nayagan, is slated for theatrical release in July. The film, directed by H Vinoth, had been stalled by the Central Board of Film Certification and a protracted legal battle before finally clearing the way for audiences.

During the hold‑up, the film was leaked online, sparking rumors that the leak was orchestrated to boost Vijay’s campaign in the Tamil Nadu assembly elections. When questioned in Chennai on Tuesday, Vinoth denied any deliberate leak, saying the allegation “caused him distress.” He added that a film with a ₹400 crore budget would not simply be leaked and that any plot to do so would be uncovered “in a matter of hours or days.”

Vinoth pointed out that Vijay was not the Chief Minister at the time of the leak and that the star had little influence over state affairs. He dismissed the claims as political mileage, noting that the leak was treated as a legal matter by the police after a complaint from the film’s producer. “I think Vijay sir did not involve himself as it may deviate the matter and lead to criticism,” Vinoth said.

When asked why Vijay did not appeal to fans against the pirated version, the director suggested that an appeal could have attracted criticism, especially given the political climate. He admitted that the six‑month gap between the planned January 2026 release and the July launch had been a period of anguish, but expressed a “sense of relief” that the issue was finally resolved and that the public would see justice served.

Vinoth clarified that Jana Nayagan is inspired by the Telugu film Bhagavanth Kesari but contains 50% new content. The ensemble cast includes Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Prakash Raj and Narain. With the film’s release behind him, Vijay will now focus on his political career as the new Tamil Nadu Chief Minister.
