Arijit Singh's Retirement Status Clarified; Singer Completes Prior Commitment with Yeh Awarapan

Arijit Singh’s recent release of the title track “Yeh Awarapan” for the film Awarapan 2 has sparked a wave of speculation online that the superstar might be returning to playback singing after announcing his retirement in January. The song, which was dropped on Tuesday, immediately reignited fan enthusiasm, with many interpreting the new track as a sign that the singer had reversed his decision to step away from the industry.

However, the singer’s management team has stepped forward to set the record straight. In a statement to ThePrint, Arijit’s manager clarified that the track is not a comeback but a fulfillment of a commitment that predates his retirement announcement. “He is just completing the projects that were finalised before the retirement was announced. Arijit isn’t doing a comeback in playback singing. These are old commitments,” the manager said, stressing that the artist has not resumed taking new playback assignments.

“Yeh Awarapan” was composed by Amaal Mallik with lyrics by Rashmi Virag and features Emraan Hashmi in the picturised version, reprising his character of Shivam Pandit. The track, released under Sony Music India, marks another collaboration between Arijit and Mukesh Bhatt’s production house Vishesh Films, a partnership that first brought the singer nationwide fame with the 2013 hit “Tum Hi Ho” from Aashiqui 2.

Arijit’s retirement announcement in January came via Instagram and X, where he explained a growing inclination toward classical music and a desire to devote time to personal artistic pursuits. He added that while he would not take on new playback projects, he would continue to create music independently and finish pending commitments. A few weeks later, he released the independent single “Raina,” which was well received by fans.

Despite the clarification, the release of “Yeh Awarapan” has kept the conversation about Arijit’s career trajectory alive, reminding audiences of his extensive catalogue that includes chart‑topping tracks such as “Tum Hi Ho,” “Channa Mereya,” “Agar Tum Saath Ho,” “Raabta,” “Kesariya,” “Ae Dil Hai Mushkil,” and “Tera Yaar Hoon Main.” The singer’s decision to step back from mainstream playback work does not mean a complete exit from the music scene, but rather a shift toward more personal and independent projects.
