Vijay's 'Jana Nayagan' Sees Overwhelming Advance Bookings; Breaks ₹15 Crore Mark Domestically

Chennai – Tamil Nadu Chief Minister C. Joseph Vijay’s final film, Jana Nayagan, has opened to a record‑breaking response across the state, with theatres reporting sold‑out shows within minutes of ticket sales going live ahead of the worldwide release on Thursday.

According to Tiruppur Subramanian, President of the Tamil Nadu Theatre Owners’ and Exhibitors’ Association, the film is being shown on 1,000 of the 1,168 screens in Tamil Nadu, a figure that reflects the expected demand for a Vijay movie. He added that this level of response has been consistent for Vijay’s last four releases. “We knew that despite the film being leaked, people will want a theatre experience, too,” Subramanian said, noting that theatre owners and distributors are fully committed to the theatrical run.

Originally slated for a January release, the political action thriller was delayed for seven months after a protracted certification battle with the Central Board of Film Certification. It eventually received an ‘A’ certificate and survived a major online piracy leak in April. Despite these setbacks, advance sales have already crossed the ₹15 crore mark domestically, and trade analysts predict a Day‑1 opening collection of ₹50–60 crore across India.

The film’s release carries historic significance, being Vijay’s first movie since assuming office as Chief Minister and his farewell project before dedicating himself entirely to administration. Sources say the opening credits have been updated to introduce him as the “Honorable Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu.” Theatre owners have been instructed to adhere to government‑approved ticket rates to avoid potential controversies, and to enforce the ‘A’ certification guidelines strictly, barring entry to viewers under 18.

Director H Vinoth has highlighted that Jana Nayagan tackles sensitive issues regarding the protection of democracy. He has urged audiences to view the film as “the first film of a sitting Chief Minister” rather than merely a farewell commercial entertainer. Produced by KVN Productions on a reported budget exceeding ₹300 crore, the film features an ensemble cast that includes Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, and Prakash Raj, with music composed by Anirudh Ravichander.

First‑day first‑show screenings will begin at 8.40 a.m. across Tamil Nadu on July 23.
