Aamir Khan's 3 Idiots Not Re-Releasing in Theatres; Denies False Social Media Claims

Rumours that the 2009 hit 3 Idiots would return to Indian cinemas for Teacher’s Day celebrations have been debunked by the film’s production house. The viral claim surfaced on Tuesday after a social‑media post suggested the blockbuster, which stars Aamir Khan, R. Madhavan and Sharman Joshi, would re‑release on 4 September. The buzz was amplified by ongoing student protests and Aamir Khan’s earlier denial that the story was inspired by real‑life educationist Sonam Wangchuk.

Vidhu Vinod Chopra Films, the studio behind the movie, issued a statement on its Instagram account on Wednesday afternoon. The post read: “With reference to recent media reports claiming that 3 Idiots will be re‑released on 4th September, Vidhu Vinod Chopra Films would like to clarify that these reports are false and factually incorrect.” The studio also urged the press and fans to rely only on official announcements from its verified channels.

Director Rajkumar Hirani’s film was a critical and commercial triumph upon its original release, praised for its critique of India’s education system. The ensemble cast also featured Kareena Kapoor Khan, Boman Irani and Mona Singh, delivering a blend of comedy and social commentary.

During the London Indian Film Festival, Aamir Khan addressed the misconception that the film was based on Sonam Wangchuk. He stated, “No, that is not true actually. That is a misconception. I didn’t know about Mr. Sonam at that time when we were doing the film, 3 Idiots. I saw a video of Chatur just recently, and he said that. But he is wrong. Maybe that is what Chatur was thinking, but I want to tell you that neither Raju nor Abhijat, who are the two writers, we didn’t know about Mr. Sonam.” He added that while the filmmaker respects Wangchuk’s work, the movie’s characters are not derived from him.

With the production house’s clarification and Aamir Khan’s statement, the false narrative that 3 Idiots will be re‑released in theatres has been conclusively refuted. Fans can continue to enjoy the original 2009 version without expecting a new theatrical run.
