Sophia Maddox Uncovers Charles Manson Family Secret; Premieres Chilling Documentary

Los Angeles‑based actress and filmmaker Sophia Maddox has turned a family secret into a cinematic investigation with her new Hulu documentary, My Grandfather Charles Manson, which premieres on July 22. The 26‑year‑old tells the startling story of how her father, Daniel Arguelles, discovered through DNA testing that the infamous cult leader and convicted murderer Charles Manson was his biological father, and how that revelation has reshaped Maddox’s own identity.

Maddox first learned of the connection after a COVID‑19 bout during a flight, when she spoke with her father over the phone. He told her, “It just popped up… I think I found out who my dad is. And if it’s true, it’s really dark.” Arguelles, who was raised by his mother and stepfather, had never known his own biological father. In 2015 he entered his DNA into a genealogy website, and years later matched with Michael Brunner, one of Manson’s known sons, on Ancestry.com. A follow‑up test in 2022 confirmed the link, revealing a lineage that had remained hidden for decades.

In the film, Maddox chronicles her journey from disbelief to acceptance, interviewing former Manson Family members such as Lynette “Squeaky” Fromme—who was portrayed by Dakota Fanning in Quentin Tarantino’s 2019 film Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood. She seeks firsthand accounts from those who knew Manson, aiming to go beyond courtroom transcripts and media portrayals to understand the man behind the myth.

Maddox’s story is framed by the broader context of her family’s past. Prior to the DNA revelation, her primary reference was Tarantino’s cinematic reimagining of the 1969 Tate–LaBianca murders. Now, she has formed a relationship with Brunner while continuing to dig into the hidden chapters of her heritage, confronting the legacy of one of America’s most infamous criminal figures.

The documentary promises an intimate look at how a single genetic discovery can unravel a family’s history and force a young woman to reconcile her own identity with the shadow of a notorious ancestor. Viewers can expect a blend of personal narrative, historical context, and raw interviews that challenge the viewer to consider the lasting impact of crime, legacy, and family secrets.
