Karthi’s Monica Bellucci comparison sparks backlash; Malavika Mohanan defends her role

During a recent promotional event for the upcoming spy thriller Sardar 2, actor Karthi sparked controversy with remarks about co‑star Malavika Mohanan. While speaking to the media, Karthi compared the actress to Italian icon Monica Bellucci and expressed a wish that the director had outfitted her in more glamorous attire. The comment, delivered on stage, was met with backlash from fans and critics alike.

Malavika Mohanan, who is set to share the screen with Karthi in the film, addressed the uproar on the SS Podcast. She explained that Karthi had approached her about her character’s wardrobe, noting that both protagonists are spies who can adopt any look while undercover. She cited the film Mr and Mrs Smith as an example, where Angelina Jolie performed stunts in a skirt and top, blending action with stylish clothing.

In the conversation, Malavika highlighted a planned stunt sequence on a plane, where Karthi suggested she wear a skirt to create a cinematic contrast. She praised Karthi’s professionalism, describing him as a gentleman who values creative liberty. She also mentioned that both Suriya and Karthi are regarded as courteous actors, and while she has not worked with Suriya, she trusts Karthi’s approach.

At the pre‑release gathering, Karthi also joked about the film’s tone, saying he hoped it would resemble Mission Impossible rather than a traditional spy narrative. He added, “I am not James Bond, because I am a spy in a lungi. A leather jacket and a bike don’t suit me.” He then returned to Malavika, reiterating his comparison to Bellucci and his desire for a more glamorous costume, only to be told by the director that the character Sara would not wear such attire.

“Sardar 2” will feature Karthi and Rajisha Vijayan reprising their roles from the 2022 film, while Malavika, SJ Suryah, and Ashika Ranganath join the cast. The film is slated for theatrical release on September 10.
