Cinema VinesThe 2007 thriller Awarapan, directed by Mohit Suri and featuring Emraan Hashmi, Shriya Saran, Ashutosh Rana, Ashish Vidyarthi, Shaad Randhawa, Purab Kohli and Mrinalini Sharma, is set for a theatrical re‑release on July 31. The move comes two weeks before the scheduled debut of its sequel, Awarapan 2, which will hit cinemas on August 14.
According to a source speaking to Bollywood Hungama, the decision to bring the original film back to the big screen was driven by its enduring appeal. “Awarapan still holds strong recall value because of the casting, subject, emotional and massy moments and, most importantly, its timeless music score,” the insider said. “Hence, it was decided to bring it in cinemas before the release of Awarapan 2.”
The re‑release will run concurrently with the arrival of the Hollywood blockbuster Spider‑Man: Brand New Day, which is slated for Indian release on July 30. The source added that the two films will “clash” at the box office, noting that Spider‑Man is expected to open huge and that the Awarapan re‑release could also attract significant footfall.
Industry observers point out that Awarapan did not perform strongly during its original theatrical run but later gained a cult following through television, home video and OTT platforms. The re‑release aims to tap into a new generation of viewers who were either too young or not yet born when the film first premiered, as well as long‑time fans who regret missing the original theatrical experience. Similar patterns have been seen with Tumbbad, Sanam Teri Kasam and Laila Majnu, which underperformed initially but became hits upon re‑release.
While the original film’s cast includes Emraan Hashmi, Shriya Saran, Ashutosh Rana, Ashish Vidyarthi, Shaad Randhawa, Purab Kohli and Mrinalini Sharma, the sequel will feature Emraan Hashmi again alongside Disha Patani, Shabana Azmi and will be directed by Nitin Kakkar. The new film’s release date is set for August 14.
In related news, Emraan Hashmi and Vishesh Bhatt recently shared an emotional message with fans, introducing new voice actor Subodhh Sharma for the track ‘Ve Junoon’ from Awarapan 2.
