Akshay Kumar’s Mohra Returns for Diwali Clash; Faces Ranbir Kapoor’s Ramayana

In a surprising turn of events, the 1994 action‑thriller Mohra is slated to make a comeback to Indian cinemas this Diwali, slated to hit screens on November 6. The film, which originally opened on July 1, 1994, is being re‑released in a 4K remastered format by Deepinder Singh’s Rimpy Films International, a company that has already announced plans to bring back a slate of classic titles including Vidhaata (1982), Tridev (1989), Gupt (1994), and Yudh (1985).

The decision comes amid a brief revival of re‑release trends that began in 2024, when films such as Rockstar (2011), Laila Majnu (2018), and Tumbbad (2018) enjoyed strong second‑innings business. In 2025, Sanam Teri Kasam (2016) set a new benchmark for re‑releases by grossing over Rs. 40 crore, the highest ever for a film returned to theatres. Although the overall trend has cooled, recent releases like Avengers: Endgame – Encore have shown that the model still has potential.

Trimurti Films Pvt. Ltd., the original production house behind Mohra, confirmed the re‑release through a YouTube video posted yesterday. The film’s return coincides with a major clash: the highly anticipated Ramayana, starring Ranbir Kapoor, Yash, Sai Pallavi and others, is also scheduled for a Diwali release. The two movies will compete for audience attention during the festive week, a rare occurrence that could split box‑office receipts.

One of the theatres set to screen Mohra is Heera Talkies in Agra, Uttar Pradesh. Notably, this single‑screen venue will show the film in all four daily shows, leaving no room for Ramayana to be screened there. The decision underscores the confidence Rimpy Films has in the nostalgic appeal of the 1994 classic.

In addition to Mohra, Rimpy Films International has already re‑released Zora (2025), a recent directorial effort by Rajiv Rai, which is also playing at Heera Talkies. The company’s social media channels have been active in sharing updates about the re‑release schedule and the technical enhancements that will bring the original soundtrack and visuals back to their former glory.

Mohra features an ensemble cast that includes Naseeruddin Shah, Akshay Kumar, Suniel Shetty, Raveena Tandon, Paresh Rawal, Gulshan Grover, Raza Murad, Sadashiv Amrapurkar and Poonam Jhawer. The film was a blockbuster upon its original release, thanks to its mass‑appealing action sequences, strong performances, and memorable music by Viju Shah. Fans of the iconic tracks “Tu Cheez Badi Hai Mast Mast” and “Tip Tip Barsa Paani” are expected to flock to the big screen to experience the songs in full 4K glory.

Whether the re‑release of Mohra can capture the hearts of contemporary audiences and hold its own against the mammoth Ramayana remains to be seen. The clash will test the enduring appeal of classic Bollywood action against the spectacle of a modern epic, offering cinema lovers a unique choice this Diwali.
