ABC’s 20/20 episode “Where are you Jacob?” aired on Friday, July 17, reigniting public interest in the 1989 kidnapping of 11‑year‑old Jacob Wetterling. The story follows the long‑search that culminated in the discovery of his remains near Paynesville, Minnesota, and the eventual identification of his abductor, Danny Heinrich, in 2016. The new broadcast also spotlights the Wetterling family, particularly parents Jerry and Patty, who continue to reside in St. Joseph, Minnesota.
Patty Wetterling, a former stay‑at‑home mother, recalls the close bond she shared with her children—Amy, Jacob, Trevor, and Carmen—describing the family’s life as “fun” before the tragedy struck. After Jacob’s disappearance, she became a prominent advocate for children’s safety, serving as chair of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and co‑authoring the 2023 book Dear Jacob with Joy Baker.
The 20/20 program features interviews with Patty, veteran Minnesota reporter Caroline Lowe, and Jared Scheierl, a fellow victim of Heinrich’s kidnapping nine months before Jacob. Scheierl recounts how Heinrich forced him to flee from Cold Spring, threatening to shoot him if he did not run.
In 2017, filmmaker Chris Newberry interviewed the Wetterlings for the documentary Echoes in the Night: The Search for Jacob Wetterling. The parents’ testimony remains a crucial part of the ongoing narrative that has kept the case in the national consciousness for over three decades.
