Vijay's Jana Nayagan; Gets Delayed Release with New Changes

Actor‑turned‑Tamil Nadu chief minister Vijay is set to release his final film, Jana Nayagan, in theatres this week after a nearly seven‑month delay. The political drama, directed by H Vinoth, was originally slated for a January release but was postponed indefinitely when it failed to secure certification from the Central Board of Film Certification (CBFC). The delay was used to add fresh footage and make several changes that mirror Vijay’s recent rise to political power.

In the new cut, Vijay’s signature hand‑slashing gesture—first seen in the promotional track “Raavana Mavandaa”—has been inserted to echo a real‑life action he performed in the state assembly earlier this year. The gesture, along with other updates, blurs the line between the star’s on‑screen persona and his real‑world political role. The film’s music, composed by Anirudh Ravichander with lyrics by Vivek, also received a new track that has been previewed by the production house.

One of the most noticeable changes is the title card. While Vijay has traditionally been billed as “Thalapathy Vijay” in his films, the new version adds the words “honourable Tamil Nadu CM” to the card, signalling his current status. Direct references and nods to his party, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK), have been woven into the final cut as well.

The CBFC had previously demanded nearly 20 seconds of cuts, 10 seconds of replacement footage, and the muting of religious references. After these edits were made, the board finally granted certification, allowing the film to hit screens on July 23.

KVN Productions, the makers of Jana Nayagan, announced a worldwide premiere and confirmed bookings for the film across roughly 8,000 screens in 30 countries and Indian states. Ticket demand in Tamil Nadu was described as “tremendous pressure,” with theatre owners struggling to meet the high demand. The ensemble cast includes Pooja Hegde, Bobby Deol, Mamitha Baiju, Gautham Vasudev Menon, Prakash Raj, and Narain, and the film is expected to be Vijay’s last cinematic appearance as he focuses fully on his political career.
