Anupama Parameswaran feared losing control in past relationship; resisted engagement to protect career

In a candid interview with Dhanya Varma, actress Anupama Parameswaran opened up about a past romance that almost led her to abandon her film career. She explained that within the first three months of the relationship, the idea of engagement began to surface, yet she found herself repeatedly postponing the commitment. The actress revealed that her family, close friends and even her own staff had sensed early warning signs of an unhealthy dynamic, noting her growing withdrawal and altered behaviour.

As the engagement talks persisted, Anupama grew increasingly skeptical of the urgency behind them. She said the pressure to formalise the relationship seemed aimed at making her quit acting and surrender more control over her life. “I was living in constant fear, worrying about how my partner would react to something I said,” she said, describing a sense of insecurity that replaced the comfort she expected in a partnership.

Determined not to be coerced, Anupama deliberately delayed the engagement, offering a range of excuses: more time was needed, the timing was wrong, concerns about age and future plans, and even suggesting egg‑freezing as a way to postpone the decision. She admitted that these tactics were a conscious effort to protect herself from a relationship that was not founded on love.

She warned that if she had not resisted, she might have married and later divorced. While both families were aware of the relationship and the couple had spent time with each other’s relatives, the controlling behaviour intensified as the relationship deepened, extending into her professional life. Anupama cited her hit film “Dragon” as an example of a project she could not promote due to interference, and she was forced to drop several other projects. She described the experience as emotionally exhausting, to the point where she feared a breakdown if anyone simply asked if she was okay.
